Strong currents from powerful thrusters wash out the sand and gravel from the slope. The slope will shrink and the protective plastering collapse.

Securing pillars, culverts, riverbanks and other areas where riprap and gravel is washed out by flowing water.

Mapping the seabed topography, currents and whirls, conditions of the riprap slope, concrete structures, etc. to evaluate maintenance needs.
Half price on erosion protection!
Our new technology on erosion and scour protection represents huge cost benefits compared with traditional methods. We are often talking about half price on erosion protection on i.e. a new ferry quay, and a fraction of the normal price if we consider the lifetime maintenance cost of a ferry quay. Our protection comes with a guaranteed lifetime of 60 years.
Repair and improvements of erosion protection on existing maritime infrastructure is even more cost effective with this method. The predesigned reinforced and flexible concrete formwork makes it much easier to access the damaged area (i.e. under a quay deck), and it can be installed and filled with concrete quickly.
The recognized Norwegian consulting company Barlindhaug Consult AS has done a comparative cost analysis on a case similar to the Svolvær-case.
The comparison shows that the Marecom method cut the cost by almost 50 %. Normally an erosion protection by traditional methods would need repair now and then, maybe every 10 years. The mattress is however mainenancefree for at least 60 years.

More details on the Barlindhaug report
To do substantial repair in the erosion protection is often complicated and costly. Access to the damaged area can be difficult, and there will often be a need for removing parts of the structure or to use special rigs. The cost of moving heavy equipment to the location can be high.
Normal procedure when repairing av ferry quay:
1. Removal of the quay bridge
2. Gravel/riprap refill and repair of the slope
3. Puting out filtering sheets
4. Placing stone/boulder blocks
5. Reinstalling the quay bridge.
A breakdown of the cost for the Svolvær-case looks like the table below when translated into English. Cost is specified in EUR.

The cost breakdown shows that total cost was reduced by 48 %. If maintenance cost is taken into consideration the cost benefit of the Marecom-method is even greater.
